Picture this: you’re lacing up for your morning run, ready to shake off sleep and clock some miles. You glance down at your trusty Garmin to check your stats, and… nothing. A blank screen. No reassuring beep. Just silence.
For many runners, this nightmare became reality as reports surfaced of Garmin watches suddenly dying. The issue has hit multiple models, including the high-end Fenix 8. All the users are seeing is the blue triangle of death, aka Garmin’s start up screen.
We rely on our watches to track our splits, monitor our heart rates, and, let’s be honest, give us a reason to keep running when the sofa is calling. So, when technology fails us, it feels like bonking at mile 20 of a marathon—unexpected, frustrating, and slightly existential.
But before you spiral into panic mode (or consider taking up cycling out of sheer despair), here are a few things to remember:
1. Breathe. It’s Not the End of the World (or Your Running Career).
Yes, your watch is important, but it’s not why you run. You run for the feeling, the rhythm, the escape. A dead Garmin doesn’t mean your run didn’t happen—it just means you won’t get to obsess over the data afterward (which, let’s be real, might not be the worst thing). You can always run with the Strava app on your phone…
2. Check in With Garmin Support.
Before you start mourning your watch, reach out to Garmin’s customer service. There’s a chance they can revive it or, at the very least, offer a solution. With many solutions surfacing over on Reddit.
3. Embrace the Freedom of Running Tech-Free.
I know, I know. The thought of running without pace updates or heart rate zones feels prehistoric and not being able to post about it on the internet feels just as prehistoric. But there’s something liberating about tuning into your body instead of your wrist.
4. Remember: You’re Still a Runner.
With or without a watch, you are a runner. Your miles still count. Your effort still matters. And, at the end of the day, no piece of tech can define what you’re capable of.
So, if your Garmin has given up the ghost, take it as a sign to reconnect with the simple joy of running. The roads and trails are still there, waiting for you. And when your watch finally starts working again? Well, you’ll have some beautiful, untracked miles already in the bank.

I experienced this yesterday evening as I was about to time my walk to the football. I didn’t have time to understand the cause but turning the watch off and on again at least restored the watch functionality. This morning I found that it was due to a corrupted GPS Pre-load file and that synching the watch with the Garmin Connect app would replace the file. Fault currently fixed (until next time).
I chime with your thoughts about it not being the end of the world. I knew that my steps would still be counted once I had restarted the watch. However, I do value the stats when I log one of my walks as an activity – Knowing how my heart and breathing act and the maximum I can expect from them is quite important as I’m no longer a spring chicken 😅 And I find the Garmin monthly challenges a useful spur to get out and do some more walking 😀
Good luck with your Running Year 😎👍
